Kansas United Methodist Disaster Relief Office
The Kansas United Methodist Disaster Relief Office in Haviland is
coordinating all United Methodist volunteer efforts and provide
case management for storm victims. Paul Burger is the volunteer
director of the center.
To volunteer for recovery work following the Kansas storms, contact
the center at 620-862-5422 or umcrecovery@kswestumc.org. Work teams
should be scheduled at least one week in advance.
At this time (May 18), the work mostly involves clean-up and
walking farm fields to pick up debris left from the tornado.
As the recovery effort progresses, volunteers will be needed
for construction and repair.
Volunteer team information and requirements
At least half of the team members must have had United Methodist
or American Red Cross disaster response training.
The minimum age is 16.
All team members must sign and have notarized our VIM liability
release and medical form.
There must be at least one adult (older than 21) for every four
youth volunteers.
To volunteer for the Hutchinson District Hot Foods Trailer,
call Becky Stredney at 785-263-2623.
Bring all food and drinks that you will need. Remember to bring
plenty of water, ice, a first-aid kit, etc.
Above all, keep your team focused on sharing Christ’s love in
ways which make a Christian difference.
If your team will only be walking farm fields to pick up debris,
disaster response training is not required and the minimum age
is 14.
Overnight teams additional information
Preference will be given to experienced adult teams, due to
housing shortage.
Overnight teams will be housed at either Haviland or Mullinville
United Methodist churches. Some cots will be provided, and you
will need your own bedding. There are some RV/trailer hookups
available in Haviland.
The church kitchens and fellowship halls are available for
team use. A refrigerator is available. If there are two teams
at the church, it will be best to communicate with the other
team before your arrival and plan to prepare joint meals. You
should plan to bring your groceries with you. If you are
scheduled to work in Greensburg, lunches may still be available
at the Hutchinson District Hot Foods Trailer.
There is no charge for use of the church facilities but donations
towards the expenses may be given to the United Methodist Recovery
office.
Minimum age for overnight teams is 16.
